Procedures and

Materials for international deposit

  • 1. One original copy of Request for 'Original Deposit'
    • - Both the Korean and English forms should be filled out.
  • 2. Patent strain to be deposited
    • (1) Strains that may be treated by freeze-drying such as bacteria, actinomyces, yeasts, and fungi – 10 ampoules or two plate culture samples
    • (2) Animal cell lines, viruses, bacteriophage and DNA that may not be treated by freeze-drying – 20 cryovials and 4 cryovials with host cells(in case of viruses and bacteriophage)
    • (3) Fertilized eggs – cryo-vial (300 eggs for a mouse)
    • (4) Micro-algae – two slant culture samples or two 50 ml conical tubes
    • (5) Seeds – 2500 or more seeds (germination rate of 70% or higher, fully dried seeds packets of 250 seeds each)
    • (6) Plant culture sample – Two or more callus plates
  • In the case where a special culture method or media (sample) is required, please send it in advance to reduce the time required for the issuing of the deposit certificate.
  • In the case of a virus or phage, please submit the host cell, the protocol, and the images before and after the infection together.
  • In the case of a fertilized egg, please fill out the Fertilized Egg Explanation Form.
  • In the case of seeds or plant callus, please gives KCTC Phytosanitary certificate. Plant seeds received from outside the Korea may require an import permit from the Department of Agriculture. A NPQS (National Plant Quarantine Service) performs in vitro testing from seeds to control pests and diseases inflicting harms on plants. In many instances the NPQS decides a permit. Therefore, attachment of phytosanitary certificate from your country will be helpful for import of seeds.
  • 3. A copy of payment receipt
    • - Please refer to the service fee page (for 30-year storage).
      * The attorney’s address should be the address of the patent form, and the name should be the name of the patent attorney in charge.
  • 4. How to receive a bill
    • - If you need an invoice, please send a request e-mail to isales@kribb.re.kr (Please mark, 'patent deposit' or 'patent distribution')

  • Submission

    STEP1. SubmissionPlease submit relevant documents and the resource to be deposited
    (by visiting or via mail or e-mail.)

  • Review

    STEP2. ReviewThe deposit documents and the microorganism to be deposited will be reviewed. If the application is rejected, the application may undergo a secondary review after more information is provided.

  • Survival Test

    STEP3. Survival TestIf the deposited microorganism fails to grow or has been polluted, the microorganism should be re-deposited.
    * According to the regulations of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the deposited microorganism is not returned after the review is completed and after the survival test began.
    * If the microorganism fails to pass the survival test, a notification of deposit rejection is issued.

  • Numbering

    STEP4. NumberingIf the microorganism passes the survival test, photographs are taken based on the relevant laws.

  • Preservation

    STEP5. PreservationA freeze-dried microorganism is stored in a cold chamber or in liquid nitrogen for 30 years.

  • Issuing of the Certificate of Survival and the
    Certificate of Deposit

    STEP6. Issuing of the Certificate of Survival and the Certificate of Deposit.A certificate of deposit, including an accession number of the deposited microorganism, will be sent to you via mail.
    A firstly issued certificate of deposit may substitute the certificate of survival test for a deposited microorganism.
