About KCTC

Korean Collection for Type Cultures

Introduction of KCTC and Staff.

Greetings

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) anticipated that the world would enter into an era of “Bioeconomy” that would bring about a significant change in the global economy around 2030, and biotechnology (BT), integrated with other technologies including information technology (IT), and play a central role in solving problems of healthcare, food, energy, and environment. With the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as well as the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS), which has already come into effect (October 14, 2014), new rules are being applied to the utilization of genetic resources. Many advanced countries have prepared national policies to secure biological resources, the key materials for biotechnology, and to discover and protect their own biological resources in the post-genome era of the 21st century.

The Korean Collection for Type Cultures (KCTC), the Biological Resource Center (BRC) of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) is the largest biological resource center in Korea. To develop positive countermeasures for the international situation, KCTC provides the infrastructure for the services performed by the acquisition, preservation, and distribution of biological resources. KCTC does researches and development of core technologies for valuable biological resources. KCTC is also constructing local and international networks of biological resources and their related information. The KCTC also plays the role of National Repository for Bio-research Products from the national R&D projects by the government. KCTC operates BRC through standardized management of biological resources based on ISO 9001. KCTC has leading the management of biological resources of Korea.

KCTC will continue to do its best to become the world's best BRC.
